about

Time of encounter:
During biweekly cicada frequency data sampling, at sunset's bend over our nearby brook

Encountered:
By all accounts innocuous and mundane but for its cerci whose secretions peculiarly effected our test subjects, myself included.

Summary:
Hoppers and cicadas introduced to the enzymes secreted from this bug began songs we've not observed yet. The patterns were ostensibly without caprice following an unidentified tenor.
Intrigued, I grabbed one of the sterilized spray bottles at hand in order to create a mild dilution from the insect's secretion. Walking back to the treelined brook, I feverishly coated the cicadas lulling the daylight. The effects were identical to the lab, this time en masse. Due to such a wide screen, all other random victims of the toxin spray joined in consonantly. Like watching unprecedented swarms of fireflies I was hearing unprecedented aural coordination among swarming bodies. In naïve haste I usurped the natural harmonic rule among these innumerable beings without thinking to protect myself from the toxins now unavoidably airborne. I heard it too, though the unprecedented phenomenon rung throughout me from within. I couldn't discern it's rules of behavior, but the tenor of the toxic consonance was clear. I cannot say I've ever felt more intimately appreciative of these miniature divinities that others insist on calling, "pests."
